Mefenoxam Sensitivity in US-8 and US-23 Phytophthora infestans from Wisconsin

Abstract: The contemporary dominant clonal lineage of heterothallic Phytophthora infestans in Wisconsin, US-23, is classified as sensitive to the systemic fungicide mefenoxam and is of the A1 mating type. With the sporadic appearance of clonal lineage US-8, classified as resistant to mefenoxam and of the A2 mating type, there is a need for ongoing monitoring and characterization. Isolates of P. infestans collected from Wisconsin during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons were tested for sensitivity to mefenoxam with discr… Show more

“…Previous studies have documented notable effects of chlorothalonil on soil fungal community structure and function, signifying potential threat to the agroecosystem 22 , 59 . Mefenoxam, a systemic fungicide, controls oomycete diseases, including Pythium infections in carrots 13 , 60 . However, its repeated application as a foliar spray, seed treatment, and soil treatment results in the emergence of resistant Pythium isolates 14 , 61 .…”

“…Preventive fungicides must be present before infection, and only a selected few provide systemic protection [56]. More importantly, P. infestans has already evolved resistance to some fungicides [57], and strict resistance management measures are required. The overexposure of target populations to single-site fungicides should be avoided [58].…”
