Sociological models of place‐based identity can be used to better understand the social dynamics of local communities and how they interact with their surroundings. This paper explores how these theoretical models of belonging to a place, in tandem with communal cognitive maps, can be applied to post‐Roman contexts, taking the Iberian Peninsula in the Visigothic period (sixth–eighth centuries) as a preliminary case study. We argue that this approach can give us not only a more complex understanding of community agencies but also allows us to reconsider the social context for past social interactions. Furthermore, it will open a new archaeological perspective for future work on the relations between groups and individuals with their built, social, and natural environments.

This paper focuses on the analysis of the ways which areas of collective use were created and claimed in the Middle Ages, through the case of the devasos of Ciudad Rodrigo. They were lands used preferentially to the grazing of cattle and to the collection of firewood; the inhabitants of the town of Ciudad Rodrigo as well as the neighbours of the villages that surrounded those areas had rights of entitlement to access. The means of claiming communal rights over those spaces between eleventh and fifteenth centuries have been studied thanks to a combination of archaeological record and written sources. The main hypothesis is the use of a claiming strategy based on sacralisation. First, burials linked the territory to the ancestors during early Middle Ages, and after the construction of buildings with religious functions, small churches that were not parishes, would have been a key to preserve the commons. Those politics of the sacred coexisted with the progressive identification of the devasos as properties of the council as a result of the affirmation of the power of the town of Ciudad Rodrigo.

The toft is the Cinderella of early medieval farmhouses. Most maintenance and social reproduction activities occurred in this space: harvest processing and storage, animal husbandry, daily chores, manure collection, tool, fodder, and fuel storage, etc. Archaeological characterization of this space was overlooked in convergent conceptual and methodological circumstances and has deprived deprived these dwellings of their context. This paper reviews the informative potential of domestic enclosures by analysing several case studies from inner Iberia, all of which were scrutinized under homogeneous criteria. After addressing the main problems arising from archaeological recognition and analysis of these enclosures, we discuss the research challenges that lie ahead in using these data to generate critical knowledge of early medieval rural society.
