Meeting Physical Activity Guidelines in Rural Breast Cancer Survivors

Abstract: Objectives To examine contribution of social cognitive constructs to meeting physical activity (PA) recommendations in rural breast cancer survivors (BCS). Methods Rural BCS (N = 483) completed a mail-based survey. PA, fatigue, barriers and exercise self-efficacy, environment, social support, and perceived barriers to PA were assessed. PA was dichotomized into either meeting guidelines (150+minutes/week) or not. Results Our model fit the data well with less fatigue, greater efficacy, and lower barriers bei… Show more

“…Specifically, focus group participants described such barriers as personal illnesses and injuries and caretaking a sick parent or spouse. PA interventions for rural women should target them during significant time points, including after a chronic disease diagnosis, or after the disease diagnosis of a parent, family member, or partner ( 28 ). Interventions may also be relevant during other significant times, such as during pregnancy and after childbirth ( 29 , 30 ).…”

“…Prior work with cancer survivors and technology-assisted physical activity interventions has shown survivors preferred support from family, peer coaches (25) and health care providers. (26,27) There are several limitations to this study. Snowball sampling for instructors and program graduates may have led to unbalanced demographic characteristics of the population.…”

“…Individuals living in rural communities report poorer overall health outcomes than their urban counterparts [15][16][17]. Across developed and underdeveloped nations, data on geographical location point to an increase in cancer-related morbidity and mortality for those living in rural communities [18], which may, in part, be due to lower PA participation [19] and FV consumption [20]. For FV consumption, rural residents experience greater economic burden, increased spatial distance, lower quality, and limited availability of FVs [21][22][23][24].…”
