MeerKAT view of the dancing ghosts – peculiar galaxy pair PKS 2130−538 in Abell 3785

Abstract: We present MeerKAT L–band (886–1682 MHz) observations of the extended radio structure of the peculiar galaxy pair PKS 2130–538 known as the ‘Dancing Ghosts’. The complex of bending and possibly interacting jets and lobes originate from two Active Galactic Nuclei hosts in the Abell 3785 galaxy cluster, one of which is the brightest cluster galaxy. The radio properties of the PKS 2130–538— flux density, spectral index and polarization — are typical for large, bent-tail galaxies. We also investigate a number of t… Show more

“…Imaged-based angular scale filtering methods are being used on radio data to look at both large-scale features (e.g. Rudnick, 2002;Knowles et al, 2022;Riseley et al, 2022b;de Jong et al, 2022;Velović et al, 2023), and small-scale features (e.g. edges; Murgia et al, 2001;Ramatsoku et al, 2020;Botteon et al, 2023).…”

“…In the case of Abell 3411, a clear connection between a radio galaxy compressed by a shock front and a radio relic has been used to support the scenario in which particles are re-accelerated by the weak shock [77], and to test the adiabatic compression scenario [105]. Radio galaxies whose tails fade into radio halos or that demonstrate a complex mixing with central non-thermal diffuse emission/turbulent motions have been also associated with the seeding of cosmic rays on cluster scales, e.g., [16,30,32,39,54,84,106]. Recently, a connection between a radio phoenix and central diffuse emission in Abell 85 has also been reported [107].…”
