Medulloepithelioma of the optic nerve with intradural extension - report of two cases and a review of the literature

Abstract: Medulloepithelioma is an uncommon tumour. Among the various sites of origin the optic nerve is rare. We report here two cases of medulloepithelioma of the optic nerve that had extended intradurally into the cranial cavity. A review of the published cases is also given.

“…[20][21][22] This is not surprising when one considers that the embryonic neuroepithelium that lines the invaginated optic vesicle is continuous with that lining the cavities of the optic nerve and the forebrain early in embryonic development. A medulloepithelioma can thus arise from any point along this pathway.…”

“…1 In human beings, a cockatiel, and a llama, the neoplastic cells are most consistently positive for vimentin and NSE, but vary in GFAP staining. 1,2,9 In the presently described tumor, pancytokeratin exhibited positive immunoreactivity while vimentin and synaptophysin were negative, supporting a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. Retrobulbar adenocarcinomas in bird species can arise from the periocular glands, including the zygomatic gland, harderian gland, or other lacrimal glands.…”
