Medulloblastoma

Abstract: Medulloblastoma accounts for nearly 10% of all childhood brain tumors. These tumors occur exclusively in the posterior fossa and have the potential for leptomeningeal spread. Treatment includes a combination of surgery, radiation therapy (in patients > 3 years old). Patients > 3 years old are stratified based on the volume of postoperative residual tumor and the presence or absence of metastases into “standard risk” and “high risk” categories with long term survival rates of approximately 85% and 70%, respecti… Show more

“…MB is the most common malignant brain tumor in children [9] with a culminating incidence before the age of five [10]. They are treated using combined therapeutic approaches, which include surgical resection as well as radio-and chemotherapy [11]. Although these treatments strongly improve overall survival rates of MB patients, they are extremely aggressive and devastating for these young patients.…”

“…, characterized as WHO group IV, represents the most common malignant pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumor [1][2][3][4], representing 9.2% of all pediatric brain tumor cases [1,5] and roughly 500 new cases each year in the US. MBs originate in the cerebellum and share molecular signatures with embryonic cerebellar lineages, with metastasis sites commonly include parts of the brain, spinal cord, and, rarely, to extraneural sites [6][7][8].…”
