The accuracy of information obtained by 28 self-claimant mediums related to 100 readings obtained with a triple level of blinding was examined across three indices: percentage of correct reading identified by the sitters, global score of readings and percentage of difference between correct and incorrect information. All three indices showed statistical differences of the intended versus the control readings: correct identification 65%; global score: intended readings, mean = 2.4, SD = 1.5; control readings, mean = 1.7, SD = 1.2; percentage difference between correct and incorrect information: intended readings, mean = −7.9%, SD = 38.7%; control readings, mean = −27.3%, SD = 38%. Our results using a very large sample, confirm previous results, supporting the hypothesis that self-claimant mediums are able to retrieve correct information about deceased people without knowing and interacting with the sitters having access with only to the deceased persons’ first name.

Vernacular house façades have distinct visual characteristics as a reflection of the factors that influence vernacular architecture, one of which is how the locals perceive and interpret aesthetics. This study attempts to quantitatively examine the aesthetic qualities of the façades of two vernacular houses, namely Rumah Gadang from West Sumatra, western Indonesia, and Uma from Sumba Island, eastern Indonesia. Both have very different geographical conditions, cultural, and historical backgrounds. The fractal dimension analysis is used by breaking down the façade into 5 layers of architectural attribute; silhouette, main tripartite, structure, façade components, and material texture. Using the box-counting method, it is known which layer is the biggest contributor to the visual complexity of the façades. Based on the calculations, it is concluded that there are differences in the degree and proportion of visual complexity in the case of the two houses. The façade of Rumah Gadang has higher visual complexity than Uma. Material texture is the most dominant contributor to visual complexity of both houses. In Rumah Gadang, the façade components greatly contribute to visual complexity, while in Uma the silhouette has a big influence. This finding can be attributed to the way the homeowners place importance on the façade and the house in its respective social system, or even the development of civilization behind the two houses. It is also found that subjective-qualitative visual observation and philosophical approach do not always correspond with the result of mathematical calculation.

Family Factors Affecting Children's Reading Ability

Today, childrens reading ability is seen as an increasingly important personal skill, helping individuals to absorb information and export it as well. While a large number of studies have analyzed the effects of a specific family factor on children's reading ability, few review-type articles have summarized and generalized multiple influences. Thus, this paper analyzes the literature in the past 30 years on family factors that influence children's reading ability from 3 major mediating roles--family socioeconomic status, family cultural environment, and family psychological atmosphere. On this basis, this paper proposes multidimensional practical suggestions, for the family and society regarding the development of children's reading ability, which includes separate advice for children in lower grades and children in higher grades. Effective parent-participate cultural activities may especially work on the development of younger childrens reading comprehension, while the capability of independent reading is essential for children in higher grades. Finally, the author offers an outlook for future researchers.
