Medium-Voltage Multilevel Converters—State of the Art, Challenges, and Requirements in Industrial Applications

Abstract: This paper gives an overview of medium-voltage (MV) multilevel converters with a focus on achieving minimum harmonic distortion and high efficiency at low switching frequency operation. Increasing the power rating by minimizing switching frequency while still maintaining reasonable power quality is an important requirement and a persistent challenge for the industry. Existing solutions are discussed and analyzed based on their topologies, limitations, and control techniques. As a preferred option for future re… Show more

“…Multilevel inverters can produce high voltage with lower harmonics and lower stress on power switches 1 . The most common multilevel inverter topologies are cascaded H-bridge (CHB), neutral point clamped (NPC), and flying capacitors (FC) [2][3][4] . Packed U cells (PUC) are recent developed multilevel inverters with reduced number of capacitors and power devices [5][6][7][8][9][10] .…”

“…The problem may be defined as follows: with input voltages as in (1), the MC switching angles equations will be formulated so that the first harmonic of the output voltages will be as in (2). The switching angles of the eighteen bidirectional switches S xyz (where x=1,2 represents the index of the number of winding (double star); y=1,2,3 represents the index of the output voltage and z=1,2,3 represents the index of the input voltage) which will be calculated, must comply with the following rules [13]:…”

“…Compared with conventional three-phase machines, multiphase machines with sinusoidal spatial magnetomotive force distribution have lower space harmonics, greater fault tolerance, lower pulsating torque, and lower per phase power ratings for given power [1][2][3][4]. Multiphase generators have been studied much less than multiphase variable-speed drives and this remains to be an interesting topic, especially for WECS.…”

“…There are several basic configurations for multi-level inverters, and each of them has its advantages and disadvantages versus the others [1][2][3][4]. One of the configurations is the Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) multi-level inverter [5][6][7][8].…”
