Medium to long-term echo follow-up after ventricular septal defect device closure

Abstract: Transcatheter closure of perimembranous and muscular ventricular septal defects is effective, however, these patients need to be followed up regularly to detect device-related problems, specifically, aortic and tricuspid valve regurgitation.

“…A residual shunt rate of 3 to 29% has been reported in the past decades [4,13,22,26,27]. The overall residual shunt rate of 13.8% in our longterm cohort seems to be moderate and tolerable, but we have to emphasize that residual shunts were small and did caused relevant volume load over time.…”

“…However, the success rate depends on the relation of VSD diameter and height/ weight of the child, as well as on the distance to the aortic and tricuspid valve [20]. Although relevant residual shunting and bradyarrhythmia (especially cAVB) are major concerns, only limited data are available with long-term follow-up for these issues [10,19,[21][22][23]. In order to demonstrate the safety and performance of VSD devices in the long run, we focused on patients with at least 1-year follow-up after the procedure, since many publications only include short-or middle-term followup data [8,[23][24][25].…”

“…Research has shown that with the continuous upgrading of interventional devices and with clinicians becoming increasingly skilled in terms of the performance of device closure for VSDs, people expect increasing therapeutic effects from device closure for VSDs. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] However, while paying attention to the therapeutic effect of VSD closure, we should also pay attention to the postoperative HRQoL of patients to better track the prognosis of this disease. HRQoL is not only physical but also psychological and even social.…”

“…[14][15][16] As two safe and effective treatments for VSDs, transthoracic and transcatheter device closure treatments have been increasingly applied in the clinic. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]17) In some existing studies, researchers have explored HRQoL in patients with VSD after either thoracic or catheter closure. In most of these studies, the objective was to compare the changes in HRQoL in patients before and after treatment or to compare patients' HRQoL with that of healthy peers during the same period to explore the positive effects of treatment.…”
