Medium-induced color flow softens hadronization

Abstract: Medium-induced parton energy loss, resulting from gluon exchanges between the QCD matter and partonic projectiles, is expected to underlie the strong suppression of jets and high-p T hadron spectra observed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Here, we present the first color-differential calculation of parton energy loss. We find that color exchange between medium and projectile decoheres the color of radiated gluons from that of the most energetic fragments and enhances parametrically the invariant mas… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is not presently understood how the phenomenological hadronization models that have been applied successfully to QCD processes in vacuum should be modified due to the presence of a heavy ion environment. As an example, changes in how color flows in the jet shower resulting from soft exchanges between partons in the shower and the medium lead to significant modifications to subsequent hadronization in certain regions of phase space [179,180], but the overall description of these effects remains to be determined. Because of all these uncertainties, in this work we will adopt a simplified model for the inmedium hadronization, as in much of the literature.…”

“…For gluon emission in vacuum a reasonable choice is α The approximation (4) ignores creation in the QGP of the anomalous jet color states, which may be important for the baryon R AA [22] at not very high p T and the jet structure in the soft region [23]. But it should be reasonable for evaluating the R AA for charged hadrons, which is dominated by the charged pions, and the R AA for heavy flavors.…”

“…The former is based solely on the Lund string fragmentation framework [60] while the later applies a cluster model [61] to hadronize the resulting partonic final state to produce hadrons. Although such study is not ideal to accurately assess the uncertainties induced by hadronization effects, including in-medium hadronization modifications [62], it can provide an estimate of the robustness of the proposed observable, ΔS 12 .…”
