Medium for the Quantitative Recovery of Members of the Genera Pasteurella and Brucella

Abstract: A modification of peptic digeststarch (PDS) medium for the quantitative enumeration of Pasteurella tularensis is described. This modification (PDM), in which the concentration of L-cysteine was decreased and in which Brilliant Green was substituted for the penicillin added to the original medium, was evaluated and was found satisfactory for the recovery of P. tularensis, P. pestis, and members of the genus Brucella, from freshly harvested and stored cultures as well as aerosolized organisms produced therefrom.… Show more

“…Such a medium was claimed to be superior to Mair's medium. Cabelli & Levin (1964) described a medium for the quantitative recovery of Pasteurella and Brucella, consisting of a modified peptic digest medium but with the concentration of cysteine decreased to 0*01 g/100 ml and substitution of brilliant green for penicillin. Painter, Deyoe & Lambert (1966), in a comparison of several media for the isolation of Brucella, recommended that the enrichment of media with serum was necessary for the maximum isolation of all strains.…”
