Mediterranean Diet, Screen-Time-Based Sedentary Behavior and Their Interaction Effect on Adiposity in European Adolescents: The HELENA Study

Abstract: Childhood obesity is a worldwide epidemic. Mediterranean diet (MD) is inversely associated with childhood obesity, but the interaction with other environmental factors, such screen time, might influence the health benefits of a high MD adherence in adolescents. The aim of the present study was to assess whether an association between MD and screen time exists in European adolescents. Moreover, we also explored whether sedentary time has a modulatory effect on the association between MD and adiposity. Adherence… Show more

“…Optimal adherence to MedDiet was previously associated with physical activity practice [6,11,28,29], and it was inversely associated with screen time [6,11,[28][29][30]. High levels of physical fitness were associated with high adherence to MedDiet [28,29,31,32]. Therefore, strategies are needed that target increasing physical activity and decreasing screen time, as these two habitual behaviors have demonstrated a relationship with MedDiet.…”

“…As a research domain, sedentary behavior has generated significant attention in recent years among children and youth, due to the specific attraction of electronic games, computer use, and the over-reliance of screen-based engagement. [12][13][14] It is unsurprising, given the surge in data, 12,14,15 that physically active pursuits during free time appear to be slowly disappearing at the expense of screen time in developed countries for adolescents.…”

“…The traditional MedDiet was shaped by the environment, the flora, as well as by hardship [21]. The production of food at the time of first MedDiet description by Ancel Keys was not industrial and involved a conspicuous physical effort, which is crucial in the context of the multiple benefits derived from combining dietary with lifestyle factors [30] (Table 1). • Daily consumption of various fresh vegetables and fruit; nuts, seeds.…”
