Mediterranean Coral Provinces as a Sponge Diversity Reservoir: Is There a Mediterranean Cold-Water Coral Sponge Fauna?

Abstract: Cold-water coral reefs (CWC) are known to be biodiversity hotspots, however, the sponge assemblages found to dwell within these habitats haven not been studied in depth to date in the Mediterranean Sea. The present article provides the first insight on the associated sponge fauna of the recently discovered CWC communities on the Catalan Margin and, to a lesser extent, the Cabliers Coral Mound Province, while also reviewing the current knowledge of the sponge fauna dwelling in all the Mediterranean CWC province… Show more

“…Canyons contiguous to Lacaze-Duthiers, in the western Gulf of Lion, such as Cap de Creus, La Fonera and Blanes canyons have been recently explored and described as hosting cold-water corals on their walls (Gori et al, 2013;Lastras et al, 2016;Lo Iacono et al, 2018;Santin et al, 2021). Generally, in the Mediterranean Sea, canyons are being increasingly explored, and new cold-water coral sites are described regularly, i.e.…”

“…Cold‐Water Corals are among the most iconic deep‐sea organisms and provide refuge, nursery grounds and physical support for a remarkable diversity of other life forms (Henry and Roberts 2016; Santín et al 2021). Among the cold‐water corals, Lophelia pertusa (= Desmophyllum pertusum , Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most studied.…”
