Mobile phones are now playing an ever more crucial role in people's daily lives. They are serving not only as a way of talking and delivering messages, but also for exchanging various information. Nevertheless, the functional limit of the phone is still far from being reached. Among the many promising applications, using mobile phones as an actuating element to control data or devices is useful in quite a few emerging medical care and handicapped assistance settings owing to its wireless communication feature. In this article, selected progresses of mobile phone-enabled controlling have been summarized, with more focus on evaluating its emerging roles in medical care. Several typical applications in the area are illustrated and some potential technical challenges and key issues worthy of pursuit are outlined. The intent of the article is to provide an elementary knowledge for people with different backgrounds, such as electrical or biomedical engineers, as well as people who are working on interdisciplinary areas. It is expected that medical care at any time and anywhere will be possible via the actuation platform provided by the mobile phone and mobile medicine will be pushed forward to a new height in the coming years.

The use of telecommunication methods for healthcare purposes is nowadays inevitable to provide satisfactory service. This article introduces and investigates the concept of a decision support system using telemedicine solutions, namely supporting the medical staff and the patient to treat diabetes by determining diet plans and monitoring food consumption (focusing on carbohydrate intake). The system's requirements are to support the monitoring of the patient's well-being, making a choice on the right therapy, the identification of deterioration of health and alert before the patient's situation gets worse. After summarizing the currently existing diet planning systems, the current article focuses on the presentation of the preliminary work, an application developed by Healthcare Technologies Knowledge Centre of Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Dept. of Control Engineering and Information Technology. The article introduces in detail the homecare supporting system which is the base of the application, the next steps of the specification and the existing literature. Along with present tasks the future plans are also presented.

Background. Healthcare is a challenging, yet so demanding sector that developing countries are paying more attention to recently. Statistics show that rural areas are expected to develop a high rate of heart diseases, which is a leading cause of sudden mortality, in the future. Thus, providing solutions that can assist rural people in detecting the cardiac risks early will be vital for uncovering and even preventing the long-term complications of cardiac diseases. Methodology. Mobile technology can be effectively utilized to limit the cardiac diseases' prevalence in rural Middle East. This paper proposes a smart mobile solution for early risk detection of hard coronary heart diseases that uses the Framingham scoring model. Results. Smart HeartCare+ mobile app estimates accurately coronary heart diseases' risk over 10 years based on clinical and nonclinical data and classifies the patient risk to low, moderate, or high. HeartCare+ also directs the patients to further treatment recommendations. Conclusion. This work attempts to investigate the effectiveness of the mobile technology in the early risk detection of coronary heart diseases. HeartCare+ app intensifies the communication channel between the lab workers and patients residing in rural areas and cardiologists and specialist residing in urban places.
