Summary Burials, borders and boundaries are themes much pursued in early medieval research. Barrow burials, in particular, have been suggested as markers or ‘sentinel graves’; funerary monuments used to define territorial boundaries and entrance points to kingdoms. This paper assesses the burial evidence of the fifth to eighth centuries from West Sussex, England, taking a topographic perspective and examining the uses made of ancient remains and natural topography. Certain distinctive topographic traits in cemetery and burial placement are argued to exist and, when considered alongside the written accounts of the kingdom, are suggested here as evidence for putative early micro‐kingdom structures, centred around the major river valleys, surviving into and perhaps even beyond the seventh century AD.

The Gold and Garnet Chain From Isenbüttel, Germany: A Possible Pin Suite With Anglo-Saxon Parallels

The ‘Isenbüttel gold necklace’, now in the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover, was found almost a century ago in Lower Saxony, an area with no history of early medieval gold finds or richly furnished burials. As no parallels are known for the object, scholars have long debated the dating, provenance and function of this unique loop-in-loop chain, with its animal-head terminals and garnet cloisonné. Recent excavations of Anglo-Saxon cemeteries dating to the seventh century have, however, added new finds to the small corpus of objects known as ‘pin suites’, consisting of comparatively short pins perhaps designed to fix a veil or a light shawl in the collar area, with ornate pinheads, linked by chains. This paper focuses on Anglo-Saxon pin suites from high-status burials of the second half of the seventh century and seeks to set the finds group in its wider social and historical context, revealing the far-reaching relationships that existed between early medieval elites.

In 1985 a watching brief during gravel extraction at Hemington Fields, Castle Donington, Leicestershire, revealed a substantial timber and stone structure buried beneath 2-2 ·5 m of allut•ium. Salvage excavation and a further watching brief have enabled the structure to be identified as a twelfih century mill dam associated with a possible low breast mill. This is the only mill site of this date examined on a major river and has provided important information on medieval water management. Such sites indicate the great potential for archaeology within the _!food plain of major rivers and contributes to a survey of palaeochannels in this area of the Trent valley.
