According to a 2020 report, the World Health Organization explained how, in 20 years, the prevalence of cancer cases will increase by 60% worldwide. In lower-middle-income countries, this figure will be 74.07%. Therefore, the authors propose a series of recommendations, such as how to address both traditional health indicators and the psychosocial environment, to improve the health system. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the impact of cancer on the quality of life (QoL) and health status of oncology patients in Colombia. An observational cross-sectional study using patient reported outcomes tools, such as European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life of Cancer Patients (QLQ-C30) and EuroQoL-5 dimensions questionnaire-3 levels (EQ5D-3L), was carried out. The information of 356 people was compiled. They were contacted by patient associations. The results were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, using ordinary least squares methodology. For the EORTC QLQ-C30, overall health status was 66.05 (95% confidence interval: 63.78-68.32), on the functional scales, emotional and social function were the two scales with the lowest ratings (71.57 and 71.77), without any representative differences. For the EQ5D-3L, the average utility was 0.70 (Standard deviation: 0.20); 50% of people had a utility between 0.63 and 0.82. The analysed population was most affected in the following areas: financial difficulties, insomnia, anxiety, depression and emotional functioning, establishing the need for future interventions and the creation of public policies that generate a better QoL for patients.

Palliative patients require several types of care to improve their quality of life as much as possible, and valid and reliable assessment instruments are essential. The objective of this study is the Spanish validation of the Functional Assessment Chronic Illness Therapy-Palliative Care (FACIT-PAL) and its abbreviated version, FACIT-PAL-14, in palliative care patients. FACIT-PAL and FACIT-PAL-14 were translated into Spanish and administered to 131 terminal oncology patients in home palliative care units, hospital palliative care units, health center teams, and social health centers. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer questionnaire, EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL version, was used to evaluate the criterion validity. The EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL was employed as a “gold standard”, and it obtained significant results with FACIT scales. FACIT-PAL-14, FACIT-PAL, and its subscales reported high internal consistency, from 0.640 to 0.816. The exploratory factor analysis for FACIT-PAL-14 found a structure in three factors that explained the 70.10% variance, and the FACIT-PAL scale found a structure of five factors. Physical wellbeing from FACIT-PAL highly correlated to the EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL (r = 0.700), but social and family wellbeing was correlated to a lesser extent (r = −0.323). FACIT-PAL and the TOI (Toi Outcome Index) were also highly correlated with the EORTC-QLQ-C15-PAL, with values of r = −0.708 and r = −0.709, respectively. The Spanish versions of FACIT-PAL and FACIT-PAL-14 were demonstrated to be valid and reliable scales in palliative care patients.

Introducción: La medición de la calidad de vida (CV) en el paciente oncológico permite establecer una percepción del individuo sobre su estado de salud - enfermedad y el tratamiento instaurado. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar la influencia de la situación nutricional en la CV de los pacientes.Material y métodos: Se llevó a cabo un estudio transversal en el Hospital Ramón y Cajal en 53 pacientes oncológicos durante un periodo de 6 meses.A estos pacientes se les realizó la valoración global subjetiva (VGS), un recuerdo 24h de la ingesta del día anterior y se les administró el cuestionario European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30). De estos 53 pacientes, 9 fueron excluidos debido a una incompleta cumplimentación del cuestionario EORTC QLQ C-30. De los 44 pacientes restantes, el 52,3% pertenecía al grupo de normonutridos sin riesgo (VGS A); el 27,3 % al grupo de pacientes en riesgo de desnutrición o desnutrición moderada (VGS B) y el 20,5% restantes al grupo de pacientes con grave desnutrición (VGS C)Resultados: Las escalas funcionales (funcionamiento físico, social, emocional y cognitivo) fueron las menos afectadas por la situación nutricional de los pacientes, con valor de p>0,05, mientras que la escala funcional o de rol (p 0,002), junto con la escala global de salud (p 0,049), así como los síntomas defatiga (p 0,011), náuseas y vómitos (p 0,004)y el ítem simple de pérdida de apetito (p 0,001) son las que mostraron una asociación estadísticamente significativa con la situación nutricional.Conclusiones: La desnutrición afecta negativamente a la CV de los pacientes oncológicos especialmente en las escalas de funcional, escala global de salud y de síntomas. Son necesarios más estudios para evaluar si la intervención nutricional precoz puede revertir esta influencia negativa de la desnutrición.
