Medicinal plants of the brazilian cerrado: knowing to preserve

Abstract: The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil and presents an immeasurable and still underexplored ecological diversity. Despite the exuberance of its endemic species, it is one of the 25 global hotspots, due to a high natural biodiversity wealth along with an expressive environment destruction. In this study, we surveyed the knowledge on medicinal use of Cerrado plants held by individuals living in a predominantly Cerrado region. A semi-structured individual questionnaire for qualitative socio-economic ch… Show more

“…Brazil has been designated the world’s richest biodiversity, and Cerrado is considered the second largest biome, exhibiting a vast diversity of natural plants [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. These plants bring particular properties that allow them to adapt to the hostile environment and the presence of herbivores and pathogens, reflecting the diversity of their secondary compounds [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…Because of the dry climate with seasonal rain, this biome presents characteristic upland vegetation on deep and well-drained soils [ 13 ]. The trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants have characteristics unique to their adaptation, such as the production of secondary metabolites that protect against herbivory and pathogens [ 14 , 15 ].…”
