Medicinal plants at Rio Jauaperi, Brazilian Amazon: Ethnobotanical survey and environmental conservation

Abstract: Ethnobotanical surveys of medicinal plants can indicate the level of biodiversity conservation and human health by integrating social and ecological analytical elements. Considering a predominance of management for subsistence, the higher richness of native medicinal species availability indicates that biodiversity and associated traditional knowledge are better preserved. The methods applied here might contribute for the decision-making process regarding conservation public policies and medical assistance in … Show more

“…Additionally, the presence of trees of different species in Las Delicias, mainly fruit and timber species, contributes to the highest UVs in this type of agroforestry system compared to home gardens and milpa (Acosta-Tolentino 2009). Notably, quantitative approaches, such as those performed in this study, allow us to know the statistical support of the close relationship between the ecological aspect and the UV of plants (Tomazini et al 2016). Thus, the UV not only allows the identification of the most wellknown and utilized species in a community but also quantifies the traditional knowledge (Amusa et al2012, Lucena et al 2013.…”

“…Giraldi and Hanazaki (2010) emphasize that preference for such resources strengthens the traditional culture of health care and broadens contact with local biodiversity. Also, the use of these resources as a source of treatment is a safer method for many people, since they believe in the healing potential that plants offer besides have fewer adverse effects than industrialized drugs (Oliveira and Santos, 2016;Pedrollo et al, 2016).
