In response to the COVID-19 pandemic medical students in different countries were mobilized to support healthcare systems during the emergency. This study presents the experience of 580 students of a single medical university in Poland who served as volunteers at different healthcare units during the first six months of the first case being recorded in the country (March-September 2020). The mean±SD hours and days spent on volunteering in the studied group were 52±36 and 144±126, respectively, the collective number of worked hours amounted to 83,460 h. Compared to other fields of study students of medicine engaged in volunteering for more hours and for more days. The main tasks performed by the surveyed group included triage, servicing call-centers for patients and working at the admission ward, hospital clinics, emergency departments and diagnostic labs. The level of fear at the beginning of volunteering was relatively low in the studied group and did not increase over the course. The majority of students received positive feedback from families, friends, patients and healthcare workers, revealed a high level of satisfaction from volunteering (also when experiencing COVID-19-related prejudice), while gaining professional experience and a sense of giving real aid were among the most frequently indicated benefits. The results of the present study demonstrate that although medical students are not essential workers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they can be of real assistance to healthcare systems during times of emergency, and should be considered as such in the future in case such a need arises again.

IntroductionDue to the nature of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, final year medical undergraduate students have had to be involved in patient management in different countries. The same was the case with India. This study was conducted with the objective to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of preparedness training to combat COVID-19 in pre-final and final-year medical students at a tertiary care institute in North India. MethodsA pre-post study was conducted among final and pre-final year medical undergraduate students. Data was collected as pre-test and post-test multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and clinical vignettes. ResultsA total of 179 medical undergraduate students attended the training. Scores on general instructions, personal protective equipment (PPE) donning and doffing, hand hygiene, biomedical waste management, contact tracing, cleaning and disinfection, ECG, and COVID-19 management improved significantly after the training. Pre-test scores on ECG, simulation, COVID-19 management were 21.58±5.311, 17.05±4.501, and 23.84±4.067, respectively. Post-test scores on ECG, simulation, COVID-19 management were 28.01±6.826, 23.84±4.067, and 6.93±1.726, respectively. Pre-test and post-test scores were statistically significant (p=0.0001). DiscussionOur preparedness training program was effective in delivering the intended skills. The efficiency of the training program was demonstrated through simulation. We created a trained pool of medical undergraduate students to assist clinicians in COVID-19-related supportive care.

2020 m. visame pasaulyje greitai išplito COVID-19 infekcija, kuri sukėlė didžiulę visuomenės, o ypač medicinos darbuotojų, dirbusių su sergančiaisiais šia liga, paniką [12]. Vilniaus universiteto Psichotraumatologijos centro mokslininkų 2020 m. pavasarį atliktame tyrime nustatyta, kad didžioji dalis intensyviosios terapijos skyrių darbuotojų dėl COVID-19 viruso plitimo patiria nerimą ir vidutinį stresą bei depresijos simptomų [7]. Reaguodamos į paskelbtą pandemiją, daugelis medicinos mokymo įstaigų visame pasaulyje pradėjo steigti savanoriškos veiklos sąjungas, kviesdamos prisijungti prie sveikatos priežiūros įstaigų veiklos studentus, kurie padėtų spręsti medicinos darbuotojų trūkumo problemą [5]. Lenkijoje atliktas tyrimas parodė, kad, nors medicinos studentai ir nėra darbuotojai, tačiau jie ženkliai padeda sveikatos priežiūros įstaigoms nepaprastai sunkios COVID-19 pandemijos sukeltos situacijos metu. Nustatyta, kad medicinos studentai, vykdydami savanorišką veiklą pandemijos metu, įvairiose sveikatos priežiūros įstaigose prisidėjo didele darbo jėga [2].
