“…Benefits included seeing the milder spectrum of mental illness and less stereotyping of patients with severe mental illness. In studies where attachments consisted of a block of a subspecialty of psychiatry, there was evidence of positive attitude change after attachments in child and adolescent psychiatry (weak evidence) 24,44 and addictions psychiatry (strong evidence). [45][46][47] Oakley & Oyebode 48 examined attitudes to the psychiatry curriculum.…”

“…55 Indeed, a large American survey found no association between duration of attachment and psychiatry recruitment. 56 The weak evidence of positive attitude change after a child and adolescent psychiatry placement 24,44 and strong evidence for change after addictions psychiatry 46,47,57 highlight the importance of exposing students to subspecialties. This increases awareness of the diversity within psychiatry.…”

“…The principal investigator constructed the interview questions (see Table 1) from previous medical student self-report questionnaire findings (Cutler et al 2006), as well as from a general review of existing psychiatric education literature (Feifel et al 1999;Chew-Graham et al 2003;Fink 1983;Walter 1989;Furnham 1986;Cutler et al 2006;Galka et al 2005;Martin et al 2005;Singh et al 1998;Balon et al 1999;Sierles and Taylor 1995;Nielsen and Eaton 1981). Two faculty members in the department of psychiatry conducted the interviews shortly after students received notification of their residency matches.…”

“…While enrolled medical students in the United States find the field intellectually interesting (Cutler et al 2006), many regard clinical work with psychiatric patients as unappealing (Galka et al 2005;Martin et al 2005;Singh et al 1998;Balon et al 1999;Sierles et al 1995;Nielsen et al 1981) and even stressful (Cutler et al 2006). Similar observations have been made in many countries around the world (Brockington and Mumford 2002;Malhi et al 2002;Fischel et al 2008;Ndetei et al 2008;Syed et al 2008;Ay et al 2006).…”

“…And psychiatrists performed better on psychiatry and behavioural science examinations in medical school than other physicians in retrospect (Sierles et al 2004). But also medical school experiences, like clinical clerkships, play a role in the career choice of medical students (O'Herrin et al 2004;Martin et al 2005). The interpretation of these factors depends on differences between nations and the impact of changing health care demands (Morrison 2006;Van Offenbeek et al 2006).…”
