Medical Robotics: Opportunities in China

Abstract: Medical robotics is a rapidly advancing discipline that is leading the evolution of robot-assisted surgery, personalized rehabilitation and assistance, and hospital automation. In China, both research and commercial developments in medical robotics have undergone exponential growth in recent years. In this review, we first give an overview of the clinical and social demands that motivate the rapid development in medical robotics. For each subdiscipline (surgery, rehabilitation and personal assistance, and hosp… Show more

“…Concerning the Chinese market, the import of foreign robots is subject to a very limited quota, which was fully covered by Intuitive Surgical before the arrival of new competitors. The increasing complexity in the regulations will likely cut out expensive imported robots from the local market in favor of newly developed Chinese systems but it is not clear whether other countries will benefit from the commercialization of these platforms [ 130 , 131 ]. Access to the new technologies from China is extremely limited mainly due to the language barrier and the limited sharing of technical information, but currently several devices appear to be under testing and commercialization [ 132 , 133 , 134 ].…”

“…The diagnosis and the patient's specific circumstances will determine the best course of action because endoluminal procedures cannot be employed to address all issues. It is vital to consult a medical specialist when deciding on the best course of treatment for a particular condition (Guo et al 2022). The term "versatile robot technology" refers to the creation and implementation of robotic systems that are capable of carrying out a variety of activities in a variety of fields and applications.…”
