Medical Management of Peyronie’s Disease: Review of the Clinical Evidence

Abstract: Peyronie’s disease is a condition that causes abnormal healing of the tunica albuginea, causing penile curvature. It is difficult to treat and its management is continuing to evolve. Proposed non-surgical treatments have included oral, topical, intralesional, extracorporeal shockwave, and traction therapy. The study of Peyronie’s disease is made difficult by heterogeneity in the timing of presentation, severity and characteristics of deformity, and associated complaints. Moreover, meta-analyses of studies are … Show more

“…4 Thus, surgical therapy is still the most recommended therapy for patients who are in the stable phase of the disease. 5 Considering molecular markers of this disease there is a need to better understand the molecular mechanisms that may be involved in their pathogenicity and origin, as well as to establish new therapies. Among the molecular mechanisms to be studied are microRNAs (miRNAs or miR), which are involved in several biological processes.…”

“…However, current European Association of Urology (EAU) Guidelines still recommend the use of PDE5Is only to improve the erectile function of PD patients [9]. In fact, although the use of these drugs in patients with PD is progressively increasing, there is still little clinical evidence demonstrating their effectiveness in reducing symptoms and disease progression [17].…”
