“…Although SCI-related physical disability is high, even minimal improvement in functionality is beneficial to disabled patients and worth the cost of rehabilitation, 35 and children may continue to regain additional motor function months to years after SCI. 33,36 In addition, SCI patients have more medical comorbidities than non-SCI patients, including ventilator dependence, pulmonary complications, autonomic hyperreflexia, deep vein thrombosis, and orthopedic complications. 36,37 It is important to consider that pediatric rehabilitation serves a wide range of purposes in addition to improving functionality, including postacute care of medical comorbidities, patient and caregiver adaptation to current state, and maximizing remaining potential for reintegration into the school, family, and community to return to lives that are meaningful and fulfilling.…”
