Mediation of the photoperiodic effect on grooming reflexes by glucocorticoid hormones and serotonin.

Abstract: The role of serotonin and glucocorticoid hormones in the mediation of the effect of photoperiod on the size of the receptive field for grooming reflexes was determined in cats with pontile lesions. Nineteen adult male cats with pontile lesions were used to form four groups. One group of cats with pontile lesions was adrenalectomized, another group received 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine injections in the superior colliculi, and the other two groups of cats with pontile lesions were used to provide the baseline respon… Show more

“…The food intake data were obtained on two groups of cats, a normal group and a group with pontile lesions. The pontile lesion has been described in detail (e.g., Johnson & Randall, 1983; Lakso & Randall, 1969; Randall, 1964; Randall & Liittschwager, 1967). In brief, the pontile lesion is an anodal dc lesion, made with a stereotaxically placed surgical grade stainless steel electrode (a Kirschner wire).…”

“…The size of the receptive field for grooming reflexes in cats with pontile lesions is regulated by photoperiod (Johnson & Randall, 1983; Randall, 1981), and in most instances of photoperiod regulation, the circadian system is involved (e.g., reviewed by Pittendrigh, 1981). Thus we have an interest in the circadian system of cats.…”

“…This four month rhythm was systematically related to other four montn rhythms in the cat, e.g., food intake, body weight , and thyroid activity (Randall & Liittschwager, 1967). The environmental event that controls these rhythms is photoperiod or some concomitant of photoperiod Randall, 1981;Johnson & Randall, 1983).…”

“…Complete details (and a photograph of the outline drawing) have been presented (Trulson, Nicolay, & Randall, 1975). Reliable estimates of the size of the receptive field are obtained with this method; for example, in one study, a mean of 30.10%, with a standard error of 0.24%, was obtained with repeated measures (Johnson & Randall, 1983).…”
