Mediating Role of Self-Efficacy in the Relationship Between Optimism, Psychological Well-Being, and Resilience Among Iranian Students

Abstract: The present study aims to examine whether self-efficacy mediates the relationship between optimism, dimensions of psychological well-being, and resilience among Iranian students. The participants in this study included 251 Iranian students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Structural equation modeling using AMOS 20.0 was used to analyze the data. “…As it is well established that both self-esteem and self-efficacy had and have a strong relationship in positively improving the psychological wellbeing of the students, so the mediating role between music learning and the wellbeing of students psychologically was understood to play a significant role due to the nature of them. These results were in accordance with many past researchers who analyzed the mediating roles of both selfesteem and the self-efficacy of the students (Molero et al, 2018;Sabouripour et al, 2021).…”

“…A lot of studies such as Siddiqui (2015) indicated a significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and the psychological wellbeing and suggested analyzing the relationship in our context of the study. Several researchers concluded the mediation of self-efficacy in various situations in which self-efficacy plays a mediating role between different variables and contexts ( Zhao et al, 2005 ; Molero et al, 2018 ; Sabouripour et al, 2021 ). These studies found a positive strong mediation of self-efficacy and helped us in developing the following hypotheses of this study:…”

“…It can be stated that the results are congruent with other studies conducted in Venezuela during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically regarding adequate levels of academic self-efficacy (Romero et al, 2021); however, our results differ from that of the study conducted by Giménez and Medici (2021) regarding emotional intelligence skills. Our results are also congruent with international evidence suggesting that selfefficacy, emotional understanding, and regulation skills may be protective factors for mental health and well-being during a pandemic (Persich et al, 2021;Sabouripour et al, 2021;Sánchez-Ruiz et al, 2021); additionally, in this study, emotional perception established a proportional inverse relationship with psychological well-being, which is congruent with other studies before the pandemic (Extremera and Fernández-Berrocal, 2006;Extremera et al, 2009).…”

“…In effect, self-efficacy is a mediator of resilience to each element of well-being: environmental mastery, autonomy, self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, personal growth, and purpose in life. It is suggested that self-efficacy is linked to optimism in the sense of motivating present future-oriented behaviors ( Sabouripour et al, 2021 ). Similarly, emotional stability and self-efficacy were significant predictors of multidimensional psychological well-being in emerging young adults in Nigeria ( Bada et al, 2020 ).…”

“…This suggests that positive affect has a positive association with resilience independent of the indirect effect through self-efficacy. According to Sabouripour, Roslan, Ghiami and Memon (2021), the role of self-efficacy as a mediator in the relationship between positive affect and resilience lies in the notion of self-belief. A female leader's belief in her ability to successfully overcome barriers in the workplace has a significant effect on whether she is able to adjust to difficulties in the work environment, that is, resilience.…”
