This finding is consistent with research suggesting that individuals who are motivated to start businesses and who are concerned with the social impact of their businesses are more likely to be successful entrepreneurs (Flores P erez and Guevara, 2023;To et al, 2020). Consequently, motivation and concern for social impact play important roles in promoting entrepreneurial activity.…”

These two also correlate to the idea of supplementing household income, which is another motivational force (Autin et al, 2019;Flores P erez and Guevara, 2023). McClelland's theory emphasizes the significance of an individual's internal motives, specifically the need for achievement, in driving EO, and the identified variables in this review align with this theory.…”

“…Notably, Bullough and Renko (2016) revealed that male entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia tend to be more motivated by financial rewards than female entrepreneurs. Although passion and autonomy positively influence EO among representatives of both genders, several other sources emphasize the significance of the financial component for men (Flores P erez and Guevara, 2023;Marques et al, 2018). From this standpoint, the comparatively lower motivation for financial rewards among female entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia may play a role in forming the entrepreneurial gender gap.…”

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic factors and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) across genders. The study also highlights the impact of cognitive and motivational factors on the EO in Saudi Arabia.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a quantitative analysis based on the Adult Population Survey of 2016 conducted by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor among a sample of 4,053 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Findings
The results showed significant differences in most EO dimensions between genders. It was found that EO is positively related to gender, with more women intending to start a venture than men in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Self-efficacy, motivation and social welfare motivational factors for EO are positively associated with the gender of the respondents.
Practical implications
This paper illustrates the urgency to establish programs that support self-efficacy, motivation and social welfare to promote entrepreneurship among women in the Kingdom.
Originality/value
The study highlights the impact of cognitive and motivational factors on EO among females in Saudi Arabia.
