Medial Canthus Tumor Surgery: A Prospective Study of Microscopically Controlled Excision

Abstract: Micrographic surgery for medial canthus malignant tumors is the best resection technique. Infiltrating, basal cell carcinomas, are the most common tumors of medial canthus, but also have an excellent cure rate. Reconstruction with a small number of flaps and skin graft is generally an easy process, producing highly satisfactory results.

“…In a recent large series of periocular tumours from an Australian tertiary referral centre, 92 of 417 (22%) basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) involved the medial canthus 1 . BCC is the most common malignant tumour in the medial canthal area 2 . Such neoplasms can diffuse towards conjunctival and orbital planes and show a high tendency to recur 1 .…”

“…Consensus is that the medial canthus is a problematic area because of difficulty and low probability of complete excisions, 1,2 unless Mohs’ micrographic surgery is used. Nevertheless this technique is demanding of time, effort and money and not always available.…”
