Media views of the Stromboli 2002–2003 eruption and evacuation: a content analysis to understand framing of risk communication during a volcanic crisis

Abstract: The 2002-2003 eruption of Stromboli (Aeolian Islands, Italy) was one of Stromboli's most important effusive events of the last two centuries and began on 28 December 2002. On 30 December 2002, two days after the beginning of the eruption, a landslide entered the sea and caused a tsunami that struck Stromboli's coastal areas. The events of 30 December led to a "voluntary evacuation" by Stromboli's inhabitants. To understand the role of the media in framing risk and the evacuation, we analyzed the content of fiv… Show more

“…The implications for lava emplacement characteristics (e.g., wide and engulfing pāhoehoe sheet flows vs. self-channelized, bulldozing 'a'ā flows) and the resulting hazards have been recognized for decades (Calabrò et al, 2020;Chevrel et al, 2013Chevrel et al, , 2018Chevrel et al, , 2019Cordonnier et al, 2016;Dragoni & Tallarico, 1994;Giordano et al, 2007;Harris & Rowland, 2001;Harris et al, 2020;Kolzenburg et al, 2016Kolzenburg et al, , 2017Kolzenburg et al, , 2020Kolzenburg, Di Genova et al, 2018;Peterson & Tilling, 1980). The surface morphology of the lava also modulates heat loss from the flow and, with that, determines how far a lava may advance prior to solidification (Ramsey et al, 2019).…”

“…Hawaiian tweets with negative sentiment detail localised detrimental impacts of the eruption. Through grouping of tweets originating outside Hawai'i, those with a negative sentiment reveal a trend towards more dramatized and/or sensationalised accounts of the eruption (perhaps a result of international media reporting (Calabrò et al, 2020)), while the positive sentiment tweets praise the apparent 'beauty' of the eruption, alongside a smaller proportion of messages of hope and support (Fig. 4).…”

“…The media, both traditional and social, play an important role during volcanic unrest and eruption events [Rattien 1990;Calabrò et al 2020;McBride and Ball 2022]. To represent this component in the scenario exercise, we collaborated with a journalist who contacted participants for comments on the events.…”
