IntroductionThis qualitative study explored healthcare professionals' current understanding of, and clinical practices related to, Online Child Sexual Abuse (OCSA).MethodsData were collected across two UK sites (Manchester and Edinburgh). Interviews and one focus group were held with 25 practitioners working in services offering clinical support to young people who have experienced OCSA. Thematic analysis of the data identified three overarching themes and 10 subthemes related to the research questions: (1) the breadth of the problem; (2) working with OCSA; and (3) the emotionally charged nature of OCSA.ResultsWhile practitioners recognized OCSA as problematic, they differed in how they conceptualized it. There was a heightened awareness of the role that sexual images played in OCSA and concerns about first-person-produced imagery by Children and Young People (CYP). Practitioners described a generational gap related to their technology use and that of the young people they worked with. Practitioners also described a paucity of referral pathways and concerns that there was no training available to them. Organizational barriers meant that questions about technology use were not routinely included in assessments and often there was reliance on young people making disclosures.DiscussionNovel findings from this study were the psychological impacts that such cases had on practitioners, which may indicate a need for organizational support for staff as well as further training needs. Existing frameworks that help conceptualize and assess the role of technology as part of the ecology of the child may have great utility for practitioners.

Background Population growth and aging have highlighted the need for more effective home and prehospital care. Interconnected medical devices and applications, which comprise an infrastructure referred to as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), have enabled remote patient monitoring and can be important tools to cope with these demographic changes. However, developing IoMT platforms requires profound knowledge of clinical needs and challenges related to interoperability and how these can be managed with suitable technologies. Objective The purpose of this scoping review is to summarize the best practices and technologies to overcome interoperability concerns in IoMT platform development for medical emergencies in home and prehospital care. Methods This scoping review will be conducted in accordance with Arksey and O’Malley’s 5-stage framework and adhere to the PRISMA-P (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Protocols) guidelines. Only peer-reviewed articles published in English will be considered. The databases/web search engines that will be used are IEEE Xplore, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, National Center for Biotechnology Information, SAGE Journals, and ScienceDirect. The search process for relevant literature will be divided into 4 different steps. This will ensure that a suitable approach is followed in terms of search terms, limitations, and eligibility criteria. Relevant articles that meet the inclusion criteria will be screened in 2 stages: abstract and title screening and full-text screening. To reduce selection bias, the screening process will be performed by 2 reviewers. Results The results of the preliminary search indicate that there is sufficient literature to form a good foundation for the scoping review. The search was performed in April 2022, and a total of 4579 articles were found. The main clinical focus is the prevention and management of falls, but other medical emergencies, such as heart disease and stroke, are also considered. Preliminary results show that little attention has been given to real-time IoMT platforms that can be deployed in real-world care settings. The final results are expected to be presented in a scoping review in 2023 and will be disseminated through scientific conference presentations, oral presentations, and publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Conclusions This scoping review will provide insights and recommendations regarding how interoperable real-time IoMT platforms can be developed to handle medical emergencies in home and prehospital care. The findings of this research could be used by researchers, clinicians, and implementation teams to facilitate future development and interdisciplinary discussions. This April 2021 issue of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR) includes an editorial for a new virtual special issue, six articles and one media review. In the editorial, Fabregues, Molina-Azorin and Fetters (2021) introduce the third virtual special issue of JMMR. A virtual special issue is an online-only collection of previously published JMMR articles about an important topic in the field of mixed methods research. The first two virtual special issues focused on paradigms (Molina-Azorin & Fetters, 2020) and integration (Guetterman, Molina-Azorin and Fetters, 2020). In this third virtual special issue, five editorials and eight articles have been selected regarding another important topic: quality in mixed methods research. All three virtual special issues can be seen in the JMMR webpage under the ''Collections'' section. (https://journals.sagepub.com/home/mmr). In the first article of this issue, Akerblad et al. (2021) with affiliations in social sciences and philosophy, have introduced the concept of integrative strategy. This constitutes the efforts that researchers make to carry out a mixed methods research process where they are aware of and explicate the choices concerning the relationship between foundations (methodological-philosophical justifications) and praxis (practical processes of the research, the ''doings'' during the research process in a study). The authors' methodological purpose was to appraise the concept of integrative strategy and to identify how different types of integrative strategies can inform discussions and practices regarding integration in mixed methods research. Moreover, the authors examined specific perspectives on integration and analyzed three mixed methods studies as cases in order to examine and compare research practices concerning integration, and identify integrative strategies in each case.
