Media Representation of Language and Writing Systems

Abstract: This entry will survey research that explores how language ideology, folk linguistics, and bias shape media representations of language. Examples will be shared of news stories about language and writing systems from science journalism and mainstream English language media that encode formulaic themes such as discovery, decipherment, secrecy, and ancientness.
