BackgroundPrevious studies have focused on the comorbidity of appearance anxiety and social anxiety, but few studies have focused on the protective role of self-compassion as underlying this mechanism, in young people like University students. With the increase of prevalence of appearance anxiety and social anxiety in this age group, it is necessary to explore factors that can buffer against the symptoms of these disorders. Therefore, the aims of this study were to research the effect of appearance anxiety and social anxiety, then to examine whether self-compassion has a protective effect on social anxiety.MethodThe study was cross-sectional and conducted online from October 2021 to November 2021 in Jilin Province, China. A total of 63 Universities in the province participated in this study, totaling 96,218 participants, of which 40,065 were males (41.64%) and 56,153 females (58.36%), the mean age of the sample was 19.59 (±1.74). The Appearance Anxiety Scale-Brief Version was used to measure appearance anxiety. The Social Anxiety subscale of the Self-Consciousness Scale was used to measure social anxiety. The Self-Compassion Scale-Short Form was used to measure self-compassion. A structural equation model (SEM) was run to examine the mediating effect of self-compassion on the relationship between appearance anxiety and social anxiety.ResultOverall, appearance anxiety was positively associated with social anxiety [β = 0.334, 95% CI = (0.328, 0.341), p < 0.001], and self-compassion could mediate the effect of appearance anxiety on social anxiety [β = 0.128, 95% CI = (0.124, 0.132), p < 0.001]. Self-compassion played a partial mediating role between appearance anxiety and social anxiety.ConclusionIndividuals with high appearance anxiety are also at higher risk of social anxiety, but self-compassion can buffer against this relationship. These findings begin to explore novel approaches to treat social anxiety and can provide valuable insights for self-compassion training.

Background Obesity is a global public health concern. The goal of this study was to see if eating habits could mediate the relationship between psychological distress and weight maintenance in a population with a history of weight cycling. Methods A 3-month outpatient intervention consisting of a diet and exercise program was provided to 153 participants. Psychological distress, appetite, and behavior were assessed at the beginning and end of the study. Anthropometric measurements were taken at baseline and six months. Results After the structural equation model was developed, it was discovered that the psychological status of people with obesity and weight cycling histories correlated with the weight loss outcome effect (three and six months). This effect was mediated by factors related to eating behavior. Associative psychological factors had a direct effect on eating behavior (three months: β = 0.181, 95% CI: 0.055–0.310; six months: β = 0.182, 95% CI: 0.039–0.332) and appetite had a direct effect on eating behavior (three months: β = 0.600, 95% CI: 0.514–0.717; six months: β = 0.581, 95% CI: 0.457–0.713), both of which were significant (p < 0.01). At three months, psychological distress has a more substantial positive impact on weight change, with eating behavior acting as a partial mediator. At six months, there was no support for appetite’s moderating role in eating behavior. Conclusions The findings suggest that psychological interventions should be strengthened to improve weight loss effectiveness, particularly in participants with a history of weight cycling, making weight loss more complicated and prone to rebound. Eating behaviors among college athletes are influenced by a complex interplay of psychological, social, and nutritional factors, which can significantly impact their health and performance. This study aims to elucidate these multifaceted influences, providing a deeper understanding of the factors that shape eating behaviors in collegiate sports environments. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with 30 collegiate athletes from various sports disciplines across several universities. Theoretical saturation guided the data collection process until no new themes emerged. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using NVivo software to conduct thematic analysis, focusing on identifying patterns related to psychological drivers, social influences, and nutritional knowledge. Three main themes were identified: Psychological Drivers, Social Influences, and Nutritional Knowledge. Psychological Drivers included Emotional Eating, Dietary Attitudes, and Motivation to Eat Well. Social Influences encompassed Peer Dynamics, Family Influence, Coaching Guidance, and Social Media Impact. Nutritional Knowledge was characterized by Understanding of Nutrition, Sources of Information, and Dietary Planning. Each theme and its categories were supported by specific concepts illustrating the complex and interconnected factors influencing athletes' eating behaviors. The study highlighted the significant role of psychological and social factors alongside nutritional knowledge in shaping the eating behaviors of college athletes. Interventions aimed at improving athletes' eating behaviors should consider these dimensions to effectively support athletes in managing their dietary habits in a way that promotes both optimal performance and general well-being.
