Media coverage, attention cycles and the governance of plastics pollution

Abstract: Fluctuations in media and public attention create major challenges for the governance of environmental problems but detailed investigations of how issue‐attention cycles affect environmental governance processes remain limited. This article addresses this gap using a literature analysis to examine the effects of issue‐attention cycles on policy responses to plastics pollution. It explores trends and features of media coverage of plastics, their influence on public pressure for action, linkages between shifts i… Show more

“…At the same time, awareness of the environmental impact of plastics is growing, as reflected by an increasing number of scientific publications [4] and media coverage [5]. Part of the solution to the problems with fossil-fuel-based polymeric materials is the development of new bio-based polymeric materials.…”

“…Carbon dioxide is captured in bio-based feedstock, [6] and using bio-based polymers instead of fossil feedstock-based polymers reduces greenhouse gas emissions [7]. However, despite the attention for the environmental impact of plastics [4,5] and the high substitution potential for bio-based alternatives, [8,9] polymeric materials are still largely based on fossil-feedstock [3].…”
