The increasingly dynamic technological world, which recently has encouraged globalization in many domains, poses new educational challenges regarding preparing individuals to become well-educated and beneficial citizens who are capable of simultaneously functioning on personal, national, and global levels. One main goal of an educational system is to promote an environment in which youngsters can acquire and develop their ability to communicate meaningfully with others. We suggest that youngsters acquire five basic languages as tools for communication: a mother tongue, an elective international foreign language, a language of science, a language of art and body, and a language of technology, each of which is used to express themes and ideas or feelings associated with specific domains and contexts. We believe that long-term study of these languages, along with intelligent practice and utilizing communication skills, is highly useful for citizens to function successfully on personal, national, and global levels.

This study investigates the effects of game genres on the choice of certain language learning strategies among Taiwanese college students. The sample for the study consists of 162 undergraduate freshmen in an institute of technology in Taiwan. The results show that game genres have an influence on the choice of different language learning strategies. Simulation and role-play games have significant impacts on cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies.Students express stronger positive preferences on using simulation games to learn a foreign language than virtual-pet games. Simulation and role-play games encourage students to figure out the meaning of the unknown words. Simulation games also motivate students to keep playing when confronting a language barrier. The results imply that simulation and role-play games are superior to virtual pet games in terms of helping second/foreign language learning. Based on the results, implications and suggestions for further study and second/foreign language instruction are presented.
Taiwan has become a global high-tech center. The success of becoming the leading country of high-tech and information technology is accredited to the efforts of the government and of all citizens. In addition, Chinese highly value in academic success, and this has contributed to the success of Taiwan. Parents believe the success of life is rooted in a good education, especially in the early years. This chapter presents an overview of early childhood education in Taiwan and explores how Chinese culture had influenced the value of parents’ expectation in education, as well as how children learn through the use of technology. The last part of the chapter discusses the discrepancy between current early childhood education situations and teachers’ professional development.
