Medazepam Compared with Amylobarbitone in Treatment of Anxiety

Abstract: SummaryA double-blind crossover comparison of medazepam 10 mg three times a day against amylobarbitone 60 mg three times a day in outpatients with neurotic anxiety showed that medazepam was superior in relieving symptoms. At this dose of medazepam drowsiness or ataxia was rarely a problem.

“…One result of the present study, that the duration of action of a 10 mg dose of diazepam was 5 h, agrees with Linnoila & Hakkinen's (1974) and Korttila & Linnoila's (1975a, 1975b (Kerry & McDermott, 1971). Contrary to other benzodiazepines (Korttila & Linnoila, 1974) there was no impairment of coordinative skills after medazepam, and there was only a slight increase in the inaccuracy of reaction mistakes.…”

“…Most studies (Haider, 1971; DeBuck, Boon & Pelc, 1972;Hoffkes, 1972;Borenstein, Scoret & Cujor, 1973;Nanivadekar, Wig, Khorana, Master & Kulkarni, 1973;Sing & Saxena, 1974) suggest that diazepam (10 mg) is equipotent to lorazepam (2 mg or 2.5 mg) when the two are used as hypnotic drugs and as a treatment for anxiety neuroses. The dose of medazepam used in this study was based on the study of Kerry & McDermott (1971) on treatment of anxiety with medazepam.…”

“…There have been many trials comparing new benzodiazepines with placebo and with barbiturates. In general, medazepam was effective in controlling anxiety in these trials (Daneman, 1969;Pasini, 1970;Perez Lopez, 1970;Kerry and McDermott, 1971). Fewer trials have compared the benzodiazepines among themselves.…”
