Mechanoresponsive Properties of the Periodontal Ligament

Abstract: The periodontal ligament (PDL) functions as an enthesis, a connective tissue attachment that dissipates strains created by mechanical loading. Entheses are mechanoresponsive structures that rapidly adapt to changes in their mechanical loading; here we asked which features of the PDL are sensitive to such in vivo loading. We evaluated the PDL in 4 physiologically relevant mechanical environments, focusing on mitotic activity, cell density, collagen content, osteogenic protein expression, and organization of the… Show more

“…Mitotic activity, however, was on the rise. In intact dentition, the PDL is a quiescent tissue (Huang, Liu, et al 2016). Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunostaining of the mnM1 PDL confirmed the scarcity of proliferating cells in the PDLs of mice with intact dentition (Fig.…”

“…Importantly, the newly formed PDL‐like fibers grew into the surrounding alveolar bone, contributing to the integration of PDL‐like fibers with alveolar bone remodeling. This structure would enhance the maintenance of the xenogeneic bio‐root in the jaws and provide the necessary supply for mechanical loading . Moreover, the newly formed blood vessels and nervous tissues (positively stained for ÎČIII‐tubulin) indicated good perfusion of nutrients into the PDL‐like fibers .…”
