The triboluminescence of Eu (SO ) ·8H O and Tb (SO ) ·8H O crystals in an atmosphere of sulfur dioxide (SO ) or sulfur hexafluoride (SF ) was studied. Quenching of the gaseous (emitter N ) and solid-state (emitter Ln ) components of the triboluminescence (TL) emission spectrum was seen when compared with the TL spectra of the crystals in air. One reason for the quenching is a reduction in the effective charge both on the crystal surface and in micro-cracks under an SO or SF atmosphere, leading to a decrease in the probability of electrical breakdown and a reduction in electric field strength responsible for the electroluminescence excitation of lanthanide ions in TL. In an SO atmosphere, there is an additional mode of quenching, as confirmed by quenching of the crystal photoluminescence (emitter Ln ). It is supposed that this quenching is due to an exchange of energy on electronic excitation of the lanthanide ions to the vibrational sublevels of the SO molecules adsorbed on the crystal surface. Another additional channel of TL quenching originates from non-radiative transfer of excitation energy during collisions between the *N and SO molecules in the gaseous phase.

It was found that the addition of C 60 and C 70 fullerenes to Tb 2 (SO 4 ) 3 -$8H 2 O crystals led to a decrease in the photo-and triboluminescence intensities of the Tb 3+ ion, without affecting the positions of its luminescence maxima. An increase in the intensity of the emission band ascribed to fullerene at 630-850 nm, relative to that without terbium sulphate, was also observed in the photoluminescence spectra. The phosphor luminescence was quenched in a mechanical mixture with the quenchers and luminescence sensitization of the quenchers occurred, indicating that quenching took place in the solid phase by a mechanism similar to that observed in solution; this is due to radiationless energy transfer from the excited Tb 3+ ion to the C 60 and C 70 molecules. The excitation energy is probably transferred through the contacting crystal surfaces of the phosphor and quencher.

Mechanoluminescence of Ce/Tb inorganic salts in methane–acetylene mixtures with inert gases

The mechanoluminescence of cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb) lanthanide salts is studied in hydrocarbon [methane (CH ) and acetylene (C H )] and inert [helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), and xenon (Xe)] gaseous mixtures. The lines of *N , *Ln , inert gases, *CH, and *C radicals resulted from the mechanochemical decomposition of CH and C H are observed in the emission spectrum. The luminescence intensity of the inert gases decreases with the hydrocarbon gas concentration in the mixture. The intensities of the *CH or *C bands remains almost unchanged within 15-100 vol% of CH or C H in the mixture. When the concentration of CH or C H is lower than 15%, the intensities of the CH or C bands increase achieving their maxima at 0.5-3% of the hydrocarbon. This is probably due to the optimal compositions of the mixtures with the most efficient generation of electrical discharges responsible for mechanoluminescence.
