Mechanobiology-based physical therapy and rehabilitation after orthobiologic interventions: a narrative review

Abstract: Purpose This review aims to summarize the evidence for the role of mechanotherapies and rehabilitation in supporting the synergy between regeneration and repair after an orthobiologic intervention. Methods A selective literature search was performed using Web of Science, OVID, and PubMed to review research articles that discuss the effects of combining mechanotherapy with various forms of regenerative medicine. Results Various mechanotherapies can encourage the healing process for patients at different stages.… Show more

“…Despite its potential, however, the field is viewed with significant skepticism by various medical and scientific communities. Reasons for this skepticism include poor documentation, a lack of standardization, vague nomenclature, [40] disorganized research protocols, unsubstantiated recovery protocols, [41] [42] and an absence of a clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying the effects of these therapeutics. All these factors continue to be obstacles in the path towards legitimacy for the field of orthobiologics.…”

“…Nevertheless, the exploitation of this sensitivity is not part of clinical routine, and, in medical practice only a selected set of specialties make explicit usage of the ability of mechanical stimuli to impinge on yet another EMT (type II) i.e. wound healing: dermatology f or scarring and burning 5 , orthopedics f or bone repair 6 .…”
