Mechano‐ and Photochromism from Bulk to Nanoscale: Data Storage on Individual Self‐Assembled Ribbons

Abstract: A Pt(II) complex, bearing an oligo-ethyleneoxide pendant, is able to selfassemble in ultralong ribbons that display mechanochromism upon nanoscale mechanical stimuli, delivered through atomic force microscopy (AFM). Such observation paves the way to fine understanding and manipulation of the mechanochromic properties of such material at the nanoscale. AFM allows quantitative assessment of nanoscale mechanochromism as arising from static pressure (piezochromism) and from shear-based mechanical stimuli (tribochr… Show more

“…Recently, luminescent materials, especially aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens), have been a hotspot due to their wide applications in biosensors, information storage, and organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) . The main benefit of aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) is the manifestation and augmentation of radiative excited states for organic molecular systems .…”

“…[22][23][24][25][26][27][28] The changes in the optical properties are directly correlated with the distance between the Pt centers. [6,11,[29][30][31] Thus, the shorter the distance is, the stronger the electronic Pt•••Pt electronic interaction is, and the more bathochromically shiftedt he MMLCT band is. [32][33] However,t he formation of assembled speciesn ot only changes the absorption and emission energy, but also leads often to an enhancement of the emission quantum yields (PLQY) and to an elongationo ft he excited state lifetime, due to ac hange of the nature of the lowest transitiona nd the increasing rigidity of the packed units.…”

“…Some other advanced multiplexing techniques have also been proposed, in order to obtain high capacity data storage within the same storage volume by using multi‐dimensional space, such as the third spatial coordinate, grayscale, multi‐spectrum, polarization, and so on . However, substantial improvements in these technologies are still needed to satisfy the requirements for practical applications.…”
