Utilizing green corrosion inhibitors has been classified among the most efficient and economical mitigation practices against metallic degradation and failure. This study aims to integrate the features of green and complementary properties of polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) for steel corrosion inhibition. A novel PESA-grafted-PAM (PESA-PAM) has been first-ever synthesized in this research study and deployed as a corrosion inhibitor for C-steel in 1.0 M HCl solution. Eco-toxicity prediction confirmed the environmentally friendly properties acquired by the synthesized inhibitor. Electrochemical, kinetics, and surface microscopic studies were carried out to gain a holistic view of C-steel corrosion behavior with the PESAPAM. Furthermore, the performance of PESAPAM was compared with that of the pure PESA under the same testing conditions. Results revealed predominant inhibitive properties of PESAPAM with an inhibition efficiency (IE) reaching 90% at 500 mg•L −1 at 25 °C. Grafting PAM onto the PESA chain showed an overall performance improvement of 109% from IE% of 43 to 90%. Electrochemical measurements revealed a charge transfer-controlled corrosion mechanism and the formation of a thick double layer on the steel surface. The potentiodynamic study classified PESAPAM as a mixed-type inhibitor. Furthermore, the investigation of C-steel corrosion kinetics with the presence of PESAPAM predicted an activation energy of 85 kJ•mol −1 , correlated with a physical adsorption behavior. Finally, performed scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analyses confirmed the adsorption of PESA and PESAPAM, with superior coverage of PESAPAM onto the steel surface.

A substantial part of corrosion research relies on the analysis of polarization curves to obtain corrosion currents, Tafel slopes and other parameters, such as exchange current densities. This, often manual analysis remains highly subjective, which hampers the reproducibility of corrosion research and makes comparison of reported Tafel slopes, corrosion rates, or exchange current densities from different literature sources difficult. One reason is that the analysis is strongly influenced by the selected range of the measured data. To improve this, we developed a Python library for the reliable analysis of polarization curves. A particular novelty is an algorithm designed to fit polarization curves under mixed activation-diffusion control, which is a situation often encountered in corrosion research. This algorithm reduces the subjectivity related to the measured or selected potential range. Moreover, the algorithm offers the possibility to diagnose and quantify the accuracy of the fit. We use experimentally measured polarization curves to test the proposed approach, and show that for curves without a clear, purely activation controlled Tafel region in the cathodic branch, accurate and consistent analysis is only possible by applying the mixed activation-diffusion control technique. Re-evaluation of literature data shows that by applying the library, the variability in reported Tafel slopes can be greatly reduced. Thus, the here proposed approach and the related open access Python library for the analysis of polarization curves may foster reproducibility and enhance comparability of data measured in corrosion research.

Corrosion Inhibition Evaluation of Chitosan–CuO Nanocomposite for Carbon Steel in 5% HCl Solution and Effect of KI Addition

Chitosan–copper oxide (CHT–CuO) nanocomposite was made by an in-situ method utilizing olive leaf extract (OLE) as reductant. The OLE mediated CHT–CuO nanocomposite containing varying amount of chitosan (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g) was evaluated as corrosion inhibitor for X60 carbon steel in 5 wt% hydrochloric acid solution. The corrosion inhibitive performance was assessed utilizing weight loss and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization resistance and potentiodynamic polarization techniques complemented with surface assessment of the corroded X60 carbon steel without and with the additives using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and 3D optical profilometer. The effect of KI addition on the corrosion protection capacity of the nanocomposites was also examined. Corrosion inhibitive effect was observed to increase with increase in the nanocomposites dosage with the highest inhibition efficiency (IE) achieved at the optimum dosage of 0.5%. The order of corrosion inhibition performance followed the trend CHT1.0–CuO (90.35%) > CHT0.5–CuO (90.16%) > CHT2.0–CuO (89.52%) nanocomposite from impedance measurements. Also, IE was found to increase as the temperature was raised from 25 to 40 °C and afterwards a decline in IE was observed with further increase in temperature to 50 and 60 °C. The potentiodynamic polarization results suggest that the nanocomposites alone and in combination with KI inhibited the corrosion of X60 carbon steel by an active site blocking mechanism. Addition of KI upgrades the IE of the nanocomposites but is not attributable to synergistic influence. The lack of synergistic influence was confirmed from the computed synergism parameter (S1) which was found to be less than unity with values of 0.89, 0.74 and 0.75 for CHT0.5–CuO, CHT1.0–CuO and CHT2.0–CuO nanocomposites, respectively, at 60 °C. Furthermore, KI addition improved the IE with rise in temperature from 25 to 60 °C. Surface analysis results confirm the formation of a protective film which could be attributed to the adsorption of the nanocomposites on the carbon steel surface.
