Mechanistic details of the Belousov–Zhabotinsky oscillations. II. The organic reaction subset

Abstract: Our previous mechanistic model for the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction has been revised to include a more realistic set of reactions for the oxidation pathways of the organic intermediates. A few other rate constants have also been modified to include new information. The revised mechanism reproduces the essential experimental observations, although the periods of oscillation are somewhat too long and oscillations cease a t malonic acid concentrations about ten times greater than the observed lower limit. Howeve… Show more

“…(IV) and (VII)] increases steadily from 6.7 X lo4 to 5.5 X lo5 sec-l, thereby confirming HOBr as kinetically irrelevant. However, considering the extremely low HOBr concentrations in the present system, no conclusion can be drawn about its reactivity toward formic acid from this study [5].2 Figure 1. Absorbance vs. time plot for run 21 (see Table 11).…”

“…Field, Körös, and Noyes (FKN) [4] elucidated the detailed mechanism of the Ce(III)-catalyzed BZ reaction with malonic acid. The FKN mechanism is strongly supported by the model computations of Edelson et al [5,6] and of Field et al [7]. Modifications of the BZ reaction have been reported by Noszticzius [8], Rastogi et al [9 -15], and Förs-terling et al [16 -20]].…”
