Mechanisms of synergy in polymicrobial infections

Abstract: Communities of microbes can live almost anywhere and contain many different species. Interactions between members of these communities often determine the state of the habitat in which they live. When these habitats include sites on the human body, these interactions can affect health and disease. Polymicrobial synergy can occur during infection, in which the combined effect of two or more microbes on disease is worse than seen with any of the individuals alone. Powerful genomic methods are increasingly used t… Show more

“…Community assembly has important implications for health and disease (2,3,7). For example, the capacity for a pathogen to establish itself in a given niche is likely to depend on the presence (or absence) of competing microbes (8)(9)(10)(11)(12), the timing of arrival, and the history of colonization events. Establishment will also be affected by host factors, including the immune system, the availability and quality of nutrients (their spatial and temporal distribution), and the physical structure and properties of tissues and surfaces.…”

“…This is especially relevant in the context of polymicrobial infections, which display inherent resistance to traditional antibiotics (4). One promising method may be the development of therapeutics that target specific bacterial virulence factors, which have been proposed to reduce morbidity and mortality without promoting antimicrobial resistance through direct fitness selection.…”

“…the interactive activity of two or more microbes that allows achievement of results otherwise not possible alone (reviewed in Murray et al 2014). For instance, co-infections in the otitis media by Haemophilus influenza and Moraxella catarrhalis appear to form stronger, more antibiotic-resistant biofilms, than when coinfecting with other bacteria, because of effective quorum sensing between them (Murray et al 2014). …”
