“…This is in a sense the true chemical reaction and has been much less investigated with respect to the other reaction regimes (Kotula & Carter, 1995). Concerning the last topic, we have recently shown (Ghigna et al, 2003(Ghigna et al, , 2010d'Acapito et al, 2003a,b;Pin et al, 2009Pin et al, , 2011Pin et al, , 2013a the effectiveness of an approach to the chemical reactivity in the solid state based on the use of model reacting systems (NiO + Al 2 O 3 and particularly ZnO + Al 2 O 3 ) made of a thin layer of one reagent deposited onto a singlecrystal slab of the other reagent. The system is investigated by combining several experimental techniques and comparing the results obtained starting from different film-to-crystal orientations and different film thicknesses.…”

“…We postulate that the NWalls also form a ZnAl 2 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 interface but is only present on the shell surface of the NWalls (40 Å) [25]. Recent theoretical studies have been done to show that Al 2 O 3 and ZnO interfacial reaction eventually leads to a spinel ZnAl 2 O 4 [26,27].…”

“…For the sake of clarity, all the spectra are here displayed shifted along the y -axis. Upon increase in the annealing temperature the XANES manifold at the Zn–K edge undergoes a well-evident change from an almost structureless shape to a ZnO-like structure. Since XANES spectroscopy can be used for fingerprinting crystallographic phases, this is a clear indication that the thermal treatments cause the polymeric precursor to yield a wurtzite-type ZnO phase. This process is apparently concluded after 550 °C.…”
