Mechanisms of probiotic Bacillus against enteric bacterial infections

Abstract: Gastrointestinal infection is a leading cause of gut diseases attracting global health concerns. The emerging antimicrobial resistance in enteric pathogens drives the search of viable and renewable alternatives to antibiotics for the health of both human beings and animals. Spore-forming probiotic Bacillus have received extensively interests for their multiple health benefits, including the restoration of microbiota dysbiosis and the reduction of drug-resistant pathogens. These promising benefits are mainly at… Show more

“…The HGT and gene loss might also drive the variation in GCs between related strains [ 36 ] and the similarity of GCs between unrelated strains within the same population [ 43 ]. Furthermore, the distribution of secondary metabolite GCs, including bacteriocins, can be phylogenetically conserved, as was previously observed in Bacillus [ 32 , 44 , 45 ]. Overall, the prevalence of bacteriocin GCs is strain-specific, and the diversity and distribution of those genes are associated with evolutionary and ecological factors.…”

“…In addition, probiotic bacteria and their metabolites can diffuse into the gut lumen and modify the community, resulting in the elimination of enteric pathogens such as Salmonella. Salmonella continues to pose a significant challenge in the domains of food safety and public health, thereby prompting the enforcement of diverse measures for its control, encompassing the examination and oversight of food products Ehuwa et al, 2021;Hardy, 2004;Zhu et al, 2023).…”

“…Bacillus bacteria synthesize a number of antimicrobial compounds characterized by a selective activity against pathogens, but not beneficial microbiota [20][21][22]. Such antimicrobial metabolites have different mechanisms of action.…”
