Mechanisms of Physical Fatigue and its Applications in Nutritional Interventions

Abstract: Physical fatigue during exercise can be defined as an impairment of physical performance. Multiple factors have been found contributing to physical fatigue, including neurotransmitter-mediated defense action, insufficient energy supply, and induction of oxidative stress. These mechanistic findings provide a sound theoretical rationale for nutritional intervention since most of these factors can be modulated by nutrient supplementation. In this review, we summarize the current evidence regarding the functional … Show more

“…Multiple mechanisms are involved in exercise-induced fatigue, mainly the depletion of energy, metabolite accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, neurotransmitters secretion disorders, and HPA axis hypofunction (Zhou and Jiang, 2019;Ma et al, 2021). Therefore, rational and effective treatments have been taken into consideration, and the TCMs intervention has been proven to be an effective solution in help in improving exercise endurance and alleviating exercise-induced fatigue.…”

“…In this study, the familiarization consisted only of 2 × 15 min blocks of the LIST. The effectiveness of New Zealand blackcurrant extract was more apparent in the later stages of the LIST (i.e., stage 4 and 5), suggesting an ergogenic effect while being in a fatigued state ( 22 ) and experiencing oxidative stress-induced fatigue ( 23 ). In addition, New Zealand blackcurrant extract (210 mg anthocyanins·day −1 for 7 days) had the ergogenic effect of reduced slowing of sprint time in the running-based anaerobic sprint test (6 × 35-m maximal sprints interspersed by 10-s passive recovery periods) later in the protocol (i.e., sprint 5) ( 24 ).…”

“…Nowadays, nutrition intervention has been regarded as a practical therapy for fatigue management and has demonstrated promising efficacy in human and mouse studies. 6,9 Therefore, there is considerable interest in the search for naturally occurring substances because of their effective ability to resist fatigue and low adverse reactions.…”
