Mechanisms of osteoarthritis in the knee: MR imaging appearance

Abstract: Osteoarthritis has grown to become a widely prevalent disease that has major implications in both individual and public health. Although originally considered to be a degenerative disease driven by “wear and tear” of the articular cartilage, recent evidence has led to a consensus that osteoarthritis pathophysiology should be perceived in the context of the entire joint and multiple tissues. MRI is becoming an increasingly more important modality for imaging osteoarthritis, due to its excellent soft tissue cont… Show more

“…As the purpose of group 2 was to include individuals with possible early OA, any potential participants in group 2 with MR evidence of established OA -as defined for the purposes of this study by full thickness cartilage defects or BMLs -were excluded. We did not include ligament damage or meniscal pathology in our exclusion criteria as these are considered as predisposing factors for OA rather than features of established OA as such [29]. One potential group 2 subject was excluded due to a full thickness cartilage defect.…”

“…MR imaging has a role in the assessment of knee joint but it is expensive [7][8][9][10]. Ultrasound is becoming more popular in the evaluation of different musculoskeletal abnormalities such as different rheumatic disease, soft tissue lesions, and joints [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis, is a very common and significant disease characterized by decreases in proteoglycan (PG) and collagen fibers in the articular cartilage (1,2). Although many cartilage regeneration treatment methods have been developed due to advances in molecular biology and stem cell research (2,3), cartilage damage is irreversible, and the only treatment method for severely damaged articular cartilage is arthroplasty with an artificial joint.…”

Thus, early detection of degeneration is important to enable early therapeutic intervention, reduced disability, and improve patient quality of life (1)(2)(3).…”
