cis-Nitritoaquo-, nitroaquo, and dinitritotetramminecobalt(III) nitrates were prepared, and the rates of their conversion to cis-nitroaquo-, irans-nitroaquo-and cis-dinitrotetramminecobalt(III), respectively, were studied. The formation of cisdinitrotetramminecobalt(III) salts from cobalt(II) is discussed.Although irans-dinitrotetramminecobalt (III) salts can be prepared directly from those of cobalt (II),2 salts of the ds-dmitrotetramminecobalt (III) series are only obtained from carbonatotetramminecobalt(III).3'4The purpose of the present paper is to examine more closely the formation of the ds-dinitrotetramminecobalt(III) ion in order to discover why it cannot be made directly from cobalt(II) in large quantities.
ResultsThree new complex nitrates in the ds-tetramminecobalt(III)6 *series were prepared. Two of these, ds-nitritoaquo and ds-dinitrito nitrate, were prepared directly from carbonato and dsdiaquo nitrate. Attempts to obtain these dsnitrito complex ions from irans-diaquo nitrate were unsuccessful.
