The slip and instability mechanisms of coal‐rock parting‐coal structure (CRCS) under coupled dynamic and static loading were investigated using theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, and the fracture and instability processes were described by monitoring the displacement, strain, and acoustic emissions (AEs) of coal and rock parting blocks. Based on the parameters of dynamic load, three different effects on slip and instability characteristics of CRCS were presented, and the effect mechanisms of static stress, as well as amplitude and frequency of dynamic stress wave, were analyzed in detail. Finally, the direct effect on the slip and instability strength of CRCS and the frequency range of dynamic load for generating synchronous slip along two discontinuities sandwiched between coal and rock parting blocks were discussed. This work is relevant for early warning coal‐rock dynamic disasters that are triggered by the slip and fracture instability of CRCS under coupled dynamic and static loading in coal mines.

Rockburst in roadway happened along with a large-scale destruction of the surrounding rock. To study the failure laws of the surrounding rock in the process of rockburst in roadway, the evolution behaviors of the plastic zone and the criteria of large-scope failure were studied by using FLAC numerical simulation. Meanwhile, the stress response laws of the plastic zone were studied by loading or unloading in a single direction. The results showed that, in the 20 MPa stress environment, large-scale failure zone would appear when the maximum confining pressure was loaded to 50 MPa or the minimum confining pressure was unloaded to 6 MPa. Loading in the direction of maximum confining pressure or unloading in the direction of minimum confining pressure, when the stresses reached a certain limit, could lead to a large-scale expansion to the failure zone of the surrounding rock a roadway. Meanwhile, the stress response of the plastic zone became more sensitive, which might easily trigger rockburst in roadway. In addition, two sine qua nonstress conditions for rockburst in roadway were determined: high stress ratio and high stress level. This might provide a theoretical basis for the stress source mechanism of roadway rockburst.

A coal-rock (CR) combined body can be used to simulate structures of coal and rock strata, and its impact-induced failure characteristic conforms more close to engineering practice. Exploring the mechanical properties and impact energy in a CR combined body contributes to better predictions of rock bursts in coal mines. In the study, the mechanical properties of CR combined bodies with four different inclinations (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°) of structural planes were measured, and also their failure mechanism was analysed. Based on the theory of particle mechanics, a calculation model for impact energy in a CR combined body with inclinations was established and then verified by using monitored acoustic emission (AE) data. The test results showed that inclination affected mechanical properties and failure characteristics of the CR combined body, i.e., the larger the inclination, the lower the strength and impact energy in the CR combined body and the lower the level of damage. The proposed calculation model for impact energy revealed the mechanical essence of energy accumulation and release of a CR combined body, providing a reference for investigating rock burst in coal mines.
