Mechanism of Reaction between Lanthanum Manganite and Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia

Abstract: The reaction of Lal-,Ca,Mn03 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) with ZrOz-8 mol% YzO3 (YSZ) has been investigated at temperatures ranging from 1300" to 1425°C in air. Substitution of Ca for La in LaMn03 depresses the reactivity with YSZ. A layer of La2Zrz07 is formed at the Lal-,Ca,MnO,/YSZ interface after an induction period, and its formation is accelerated when the Lal-,Ca,Mn03 phase is porous. The reaction proceeds by unidirectional diffusion of La, Mn, and/or Ca ions, mainly Mn ions, into YSZ. The diffusion coefficients o… Show more

“…The perovskite-type strontium-doped lanthanum manganites have been studied as the most promising candidate material for the of SOFCs cathode [8][9][10][11][12] . With operating temperature up to 1000 °C in air or oxygen atmosphere, the cathode material has to fulfill the following requirements: high electron conductivity, thermal and chemical stability, compatibility with the solid electrolyte, sufficient porosity and good adherence at the surface of the electrolyte 13 .…”

“…Several research groups have mostly used La x Sr 1-x MnO 3 perovskite-type oxide as the cathode material due to its stability at high temperatures and thermal expansion coefficient compatibility with yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte (2)(3)(4). Although, La x Sr 1-x MnO 3 itself has a relatively good thermochemical stability at higher than approximately 1000 o C, reactivity of these perovskite-type oxides with YSZ at high temperatures forms the La 2 Zr 2 O 7 phase which has high electrical resistance and reduces the potential of SOFC (2,5). Doping LaNiO 3 with alternate elements has been studied and used as cathode material for SOFC (6,7).…”

“…Nevertheless, they present problems due to lanthanum reaction at high temperatures with YSZ electrolytes (4)(5)(6) forming secondary phases such as La 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Furthermore, alkaline earth cations employed can also react with zirconia or with ceria based electrolytes, forming perovskite-type zirconates (SrZrO 3 ) and Ba, Sr cerates, respectively.…”
