Mechanism of mechanical quenching and mechanoluminescence in phosphorescent CaZnOS:Cu

Abstract: This article reports a new phosphorescent material, CaZnOS:Cu, that exhibits two types of mechano-optical conversion: mechanical quenching and mechanoluminescence. An intense mechanical quenching of phosphorescence corresponding to mechanical stimuli can be achieved in CaZnOS:Cu within a short decay time period. Over time, it gradually changes to mechanoluminescence when a mechanical load is applied. We propose that the mechanical quenching and mechanoluminescence arise from the different roles of shallow and … Show more

“…With accurate modulation of external mechanical stimulation in terms of physical parameters, ML will provide a wide platform of applications in the fields of earthquake prediction, stability tests of large buildings or bridges, and hand-input oriented multi-touch technology in smartphones or other mobile devices, combined with electronics and magnetoopt-electronics. [7][8][9] Recent studies performed by Xu et al 5,10 demonstrated a substantial leap in this field, showing that some ML materials, such as oxy-sulfides, can also be applied as persistent luminescence materials through transition metal doping and have flexible color manipulations. 11 This requires us not only to understand the electronic structures that originate from extrinsic doping, but also makes it highly necessary to plot the photonelectron dynamic transitions based on the subtle energy conversion mechanisms during the process of persistent luminescence.…”

“…Piezoluminescence, which is also called elasticoluminescence, is a form of mechanoluminescence (ML) during the elastic deformation, which has attracted considerable attention because it can be repeatedly used for mechano‐optical conversion . Elastic ML offers the advantages of wireless detection and nondestructive analysis, making it a promising candidate for various applications, such as stress sensing and damage diagnosis, and in particular for immediate in situ dynamic visualization of stress distribution in industrial plants, buildings, and living organisms.…”

“…Taking the practical application of the phosphors into consideration, thermal stability significantly affects the performance of w‐LEDs, such as the light output lifetimes, color coordinates, and color‐rendering index . Because the high‐power working environment of LED chips could reach 100–150 °C.…”
