Mechanism of laser-induced double ionization of helium

Abstract: In a series of recent experiments anomalously large probabilities of laser-induced double ionization of the He atom have been observed. In this letter we analyse the clearest observation of this phenomenon, over a signal range of many orders of magnitude, by Walker et al. The analysis is carried out using a newly developed intense-field many-body S-matrix theory. For the first time good agreement between the experimental data and a theory is found. It is shown that the dominant mechanism behind the observed l… Show more

“…Unfortunately, the underlying mechanism for this process remains unclear, but various theoretical twoelectron [17,18] treatments have begun. However, we emphasize that the results we have presented bet ter defines the underlying dynamics of these processes and provides more stringent limits on any future models.…”

“…The strong field approximation (SFA) is a widely used theoretical approach to tackle field-atom or field-molecule interaction in the nonperturbative regime, as well as high-order harmonic generation (also known as the Lewenstein model) [49], and non-sequential double ionization [50,51,52,53,54,55]. In this Chapter, we provide a consistent introduction to basic concepts of strong field physics and the SFA.…”

“…A plausible model relevant for the field intensities of the experiments is the rescattering mechanism [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. Before the pulse arrives, the atom is in its ground state.…”
